Describe the Problem or Opportunity
To design the best features, it’s crucial that we first understand why a change is needed. Instead of jumping to solutions, focus on clearly defining the problem or opportunity at hand. A well-defined problem gives us the insight needed to explore various options and ultimately choose the best approach.
Use the Five W’s to guide your description:
- Who does it involve?
- What is happening?
- Where does it occur?
- When does it happen?
- Why is this an issue?
Visual Aids: Providing an image or video can be incredibly helpful. It allows us to directly see and understand the problem or opportunity, making it easier to grasp the situation and evaluate its significance.
Go deeper: Quantify the impact of both the problem and the opportunity:
-
For the Problem:
- How many people are affected?
- How much time or money is wasted?
- How frequently does the issue occur?
-
For the Opportunity:
- How many people will benefit?
- Will it generate more revenue or improve user satisfaction?
Suggest Potential Solutions
If you have ideas on how to address the problem or capitalize on the opportunity, please share them. Describe your proposed solution and how it might resolve the issue. If you don’t have a specific solution, that’s fine—our team can explore various approaches.
Additional Insights:
- Provide Examples: Reference any existing solutions or live examples that showcase similar concepts (e.g., a website or app demonstrating the proposed behavior).
