How to Test Game Space Light Intensity Follow
Introduction
Incorrect lighting can greatly contribute to tracking problems during operation. This article serves as a guide on how to assess lighting levels in the Zero Latency game space and the recommended steps to take to address any issues that are identified.
Time Required
30 minutes
Tools and Equipment Required
- Smartphone or Tablet
On this page:
Install Lux Meter App
Using a smartphone or tablet, install a Lux Light Meter App from the appropriate app store.
Android:
Lux Light Meter Pro - Apps on Google Play
IOS:
Lux Light Meter Pro
This can be the same tablet used for sign-in or a personal device, as no connection to the Zero Latency system is required.
Review Light Intensity
With the application open, walk through the game space with all lights turned on, taking note of the average and real time lux measurements.
The Lux level we are measuring is a measure of light intensity. If the light intensity is too high, the tracking cameras on the Focus 3 HMD may see significant reflections and be unable to see the tracking graphics at all. Similar to being blinded by the headlights of an oncoming car while driving.
For optimal tracking conditions, use the following values as a guide. Be aware that the Lux Meter App is not a precision tool, so some variance outside these targets is acceptable.
| Measurement | Target Value | Example |
| Average Lux Measurement | Between 150 and 400 lux | |
| Target Lux Variance |
Difference between Maximum and Minimum is ideally less than 200 lux Example 303-193 = 110 - ok! |
Resolution Options
| Issue | Resolution |
| Light intensity too high (avg lux measurement > 350) |
Reduce lighting level in game space - Dim lighting - Install blubs with reduced wattage rating - Reduce number of lights in game space (check that lux variance does not get too high) - Install diffusers |
| Light intensity too low (avg lux measurement <100) |
Increase lighting level in game space - Increase number of lights in room - Install blubs with increased wattage (check that lux variance does not get too heigh)
|
| Light intensity variance too high (lux variance is >200) |
Increase the number of lights in the game space to create an even distribution of light. The aim is to maintain an average lux measurement below 350. |
